KOTA KINABALU: Police are tracking down a man who stole cash from a car belonging to a retail shop accountant.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the accountant had lodged a police report on Monday that a huge amount of money from his car boot was taken by an unknown person.

“Investigations found that the incident happened on Jan 10 at about 11.45am when the victim parked at a bus stop to get money from the Pick & Pay store in front of Likas Square building.

“As he headed back, the complainant found that the car alarm had gone off due to the driver’s side window being broken.

“After he made an inspection, he found two reusable bags that were supposed to have RM230,744 from 10 branches daily sales were gone,” he said in a statement.

He said the man, who is the youngest son of the shop’s owner, was supposed to deposit the money at a bank in Penampang, including those collected during the weekends.

Upon a tip off by a witness who sought help from patrolling police, said Zaidi, the latter managed to stop a car at a primary school at Jalan Teluk Likas.

The suspect, who was in the passenger seat, however, managed to escape. The driver of the car when interrogated, said he was only the owner of the vehicle.

The identity of the man who fled was ascertained and police are now looking for the 33-year-old from Keningau.

Zaidi said police retrieved RM185,744 from the car, which they have seized along with keys, two pairs of gloves and a hammer.

The suspect is believed to have fled with RM45,000 cash.

Meanwhile, police are now looking for Fredius George, 33, of Keningau, whom they believe would be able to shed some light on the incident.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the nearest police station.
